Documentary Status
Jerod asked me in the car on the way home "How did we get here?", referring to how we came from newbie know nothing filmmakers 3 years ago to being in a documentary about filmmaking. Basically, how did we of all the people they could have talked end up being part of this project? Well, he answered his own question when he said networking.
I tend to think it's more a reputation thing. I mean if we didn't have the reputation we do we would never have met some of the people we've met and they never would have passed on the word to others who in turn had us speak to other people and then one of those guys asked us if we would be interested in his documentary.
How you treat people goes a long way toward success. How you interact with them, rub elbows with them, present yourself, and so on. I think too that how accessible you are helps because people who tend to keep to themselves instead of putting themselves out there don't usually get into the spotlight in any form unless they do something that really catches people's attention. But then how long does that last?
We've gone a long way to promote ourselves, our work, and those who work with us on our projects. The more promotion we do the more these opportunities will come our way. It also helps to have experience and something interesting to talk about like our newest short A Thousand Words: Bloodline. It also helped to be involved in the local community with running the Columbus Indie Club.
So I guess when you put all that stuff into a formula then you get to be an interesting person who might have an opinion that's worth hearing.
The next step is seeing if people agree with your point of view. I think Jerod and I are very different people in some aspects of our personality but it's great that we share similar points of view. Still, we have different ways of expressing or communicating those opinions, but it all comes out in the end. Overall I think we shared some very relevant and key information about many things.
Anyway, when we hear more about this project we'll do our part to promote it. We talked about all kinds of things including our backgrounds, our movies, Columbus Indie Club, other groups around Columbus, the Columbus Film Commission, the filmmaking community, where we think Columbus can go from here, how easy it is to get actors and crew, Video vs. Film, and more. Never sure what all will get in but it was a great conversation with the filmmakers.
